Best 10 Tips for Better Search Engine Rankings

By Rune Risom

Factors for optimal search engine ranking are often treated like top-secret information vital to the protection of the Internet! Google and other search engines aren't big on letting website administrators in on their methods for ranking web pages in the average search, let alone giving you their version of the top ten tips for better search engine ranking. A typical search on a topic like "antioxidant supplements" can turn up hundreds or even thousands of web pages that match the search, only a fraction of which are useful for what you need. Generally, only the first 10 applicable matches are displayed on the first page. Anyone running a web site wants be in that first 10 because users will generally find and answer that satisfies them in that top 10. That's why knowing what the top ten tips for better search engine rankings is so important.

Let's take a close look at the top ten tips for better search engine rankings.

1. Pick great Target Keywords - get into the heads of your audience. Let's say your website is selling beauty products for girls. That means if someone searches for "makeup for girls" or "red lipsticks" you want your webshop to show up in those all-important first 10 results. If another web page on your site is targeted at skin creams, then that page should have it's own keyword - could be "facial creams".

2. Make sure to put your main search keyword in the title of your web page. It is absolutely vital to include your main keyword or words, so they show up in the title tag. Something like "Hot make-up for girls on sale" could work to get the attention of your target customers. A catchy title is also always a sure winner.

3. Within the body of your web page, use your keywords and phrases wherever they make sense, but don't over do it. Google and other search engines will ding your for "keyword stuffing".

4. When people or sites link to you, it's important what words they use for the link. It's called anchor text, which is the clickable part of the link. Try and contact any websites that are helping you with content and tell them what you would like the anchor text to be.

5. Inbound links - It's simple, more is better. Inbound links are very important. This is the part where you need to put on your salesman hat and aim at getting as many other websites to link to you as possible.

6. Ensure that sites linking to you are somewhat related to the category you work in. There's no point in having a website selling fishing equipment have an inbound link to "Make-up for girls".

7. You will get more traffic as your site ages, and that helps your chances of getting into that coveted top 10 results list. Naturally it's impossible to force that ageing. It takes time, so be patient.

8. Relevant Content - a snappy title with a great target keyword isn't worth anything if the page content is not relevant to the keyword. Make sure to make keywords a natural part of the content.

9. Include HTML links on your website's main page that link to other relevant content in deeper parts of your site.

10. Probably should have put this on at no. 1 on the top ten tips for better search engine rankings. Spamming is not the way to go. Pilling your keyword into meta tags like there's no tomorrow is pointless. Along with using hidden text - although tempting, it's one of those things that the search engines can spot a mile away.
