Geriatric Nursing and the Elderly

By Bart Icles

Interested in caring for the elderly? Then you might want to look into a degree and career in geriatric nursing. These days, geriatric nursing counts as one of the fastest growing areas of specialization in the field of medicine. The growth in the number of our aged population has contributed much to the popularity of this field of nursing. It is no wonder that there are more people who are able to live to their ripe ages. Advancements in modern medicine, better hygiene and health care practices, and enhanced nutrition are all factors that enable people to develop well into their senior years.

Without a doubt, all these have become the forces that pressed the need for geriatric nurses. And as more and more people are reaching their senior years, more and more young people are becoming attracted to the field of geriatric care and nursing. To meet the increasing demands in geriatric care, health organizations and institutions have started to put up new facilities to accommodate the ever growing number of elderly persons and geriatric nurses. This growth is primarily responsible for the development of a growing demand for geriatric nurses that has become well ahead of the number of applicants that are qualified for this field. In an attempt to meet the chronic need for qualified staff, many universities have started to offer courses in geriatric nursing ? some of them are even making geriatric training programs available online.

Another factor that has contributed to the growing need for geriatric nurses is the rise of specialized care facilities. These days, it is not unusual to hear about home-based care institutions, assisted living facilities, and independent living centers. These facilities and centers have become popular alternatives for senior people who have mobility difficulties, healthcare problems or disabilities.

Years ago, senior people are easily threatened by certain diseases and conditions. These days, the elderly can easily face certain medical problems through advancements in medical procedures. Again, this calls for an increasing need for geriatric nurses as this condition calls for specialized skills.

The need for more geriatric nurses cannot be ignored. Geriatric nursing is a field that attempts to meet the needs of the elderly and is starting to become a lucrative career for those who are interested in senior care. The need for qualified geriatric nurses surely has attractive compensation packages to offer so a degree in senior care might be worth a second look.
