By Denise Gosnell

Numerous opportunities exist for minority-owned businesses. While each person has their own special talents and interests, this article will look at some ideas on the types of products or services that you could sell with your own minority owned business.

Example Service-Oriented Businesses

There are numerous types of businesses you can start quickly, and with little to no up-front investment: - personal shopper - personal assistant - consulting - typist - graphic designer

It would probably be a good idea for you to try out a few projects on a freelance basis before you pursue your own business full time. That way, you can make sure you like that type of work and want to pursue a full-time business around it. To locate work on a freelance basis, you can respond to existing ads that others have placed, or you can submit your own posting.

For example, is you are a graphic artist/designer, a great way to get work is through project-based web sites such as 99designs.com or elance.com. Those sites allow people to post project descriptions and those interested in doing the work can respond to it. In fact, elance is a great web site for project-type work across various industries.

An often overlooked type of business is one where you provide services to the government and Corporate America. These deep pockets buy nearly any type of service you can imagine, from janitorial services, to training, to typing, etc. In fact, you can obtain a MBE certification to certify that you are a minority owned business. Such a certification can increase your chances of getting work from these deep pockets due to special mandates.

Hopefully this gives you a few ideas on service-oriented businesses you can start. Let's take a look at some product-oriented businesses now.

Business Ideas for a Product-Oriented Business

As a minority-owned business, there are a number of products you could consider selling.

Let's look at some examples of the types of products you can consider selling. You could sell an information product that contains some special knowledge or training (such as a training video, ebook, etc.). You could then sell this on your own web site, or through affiliate programs such as clickbank.com. An easy way to accept credit cards is through Paypal.com. You could become an affiliate and sell products that are offered by third parties. You can find products through affiliate programs such as Commission Junction or Clickbank.

And just as was noted above with respect to services, the government and large corporations also buy nearly every type of product you can imagine, from toilet paper, to computers, to T-shirts, etc.

So you may also want to consider exploring opportunities to sell products to the government and large corporations. If you do, you should also consider obtaining an MBE certification to certify that you are are a minority-owned business. By having such a certification, you can increase your chances of getting work from the government or large corporations because they are required to award a certain percent of their business to minority-owned companies.
