What is SEO?

By Ricky Lim

Hundreds of thousands of results will be displayed on searching for a popular topic on any search engine. In such a situation, how a website gets itself among the top results of a search for a particular keyword is known as Search Engine Optimization or SEO. The reason for the increasing popularity of SEO in past few years is that the appearance of the website in top search results helps in attracting more visitors to it, which very often converts into more business.

Black hat and white hat are the two primary classifications of SEO techniques. The methods applied in black hat SEO for ensuring a place for the website in the top results are not seen as ethical. However, white hat SEO only uses those techniques which are approved of and do not go against the principles of the search engines.

To connect a specific web page to a specific keyword, the search engines in the past utilised the Meta data of the page that has been made a part of the code of that page. However, major search engines now utilise intricate algorithms to show the results that are filtered on the basis of over 200 varied factors.

SEO experts try to figure out the relevance of several elements in the search algorithms and stay in touch with the newest advancements that are introduced by different search engines. This knowledge helps them fine-tune the SEO techniques for their customers so that they remain competitive for important keywords. When the search results were exclusively reliant on Meta data and the content of the web page, this job involved optimizing the Meta tags of the web pages and ensuring that the keyword density of each page was just right.

In spite of the continued significance of the onsite aspects, the search engines now put a greater stress on how popular a page is. The number of links pointing to a web page suggests the popularity of that web page. It is almost like a democratic process as every link to the web page can be seen as a vote. Because of this significant change, SEO now also entails many offsite tactics like giving away free content to get embedded links, and developing an external presence through blogs and other forms of social media.

The crucial aspect of SEO to be always kept in mind is that it is not a one time activity. This field keeps changing and your techniques must be adapted to the changes. That is why it is so critical to have a good SEO consultant by your side.
