The Evolution of Brochure Printing

By Chris Lonney

Distributing brochures has always been a successful marketing tactic for any business. They can be circulated by hand or by post to clients, or can just be kept on cash counters of stores. The need to have brochures printed has led to the rise of a sector of the printing services industry, which specifically caters to brochures. Brochure printing has undergone a series of developments in recent decades, with the advent and increasing use of the internet heralding the most recent of these changes.

At a time when computers hadn't made their foray into brochure printing, the whole thing was a tedious exercise involving use of plate-making machines and film negatives, and the steps involved taking multiple test prints, making adjustments, and what not. Even in design, the customers could not provide detailed inputs and the printers mostly shouldered the design job, working with a restricted set of pre decided formats.

These days, the customer himself can do the entire designing on a computer, and the brochures can be made in a much lesser time frame than they could be some years ago. Supply of final prints in large quantities in a single day is possible now, thanks to advancements in technology.

It is important to keep in mind that brochure printing involves not just the imprint of ink on paper, but design, content and layout as well. The ushering in of the digital era has opened up a whole new world of advancements in this area like high quality full-colour printing, complex layout formats, and smart packages on content-building.

Clients nowadays most of the times prefer colourful brochures and digital brochures from the latest types of brochures provided by printing services firms. These are usually suitable for brochures which will be in use from medium to long-term. But when it comes to brochure distribution in large volume, but for a limited period, then dazzling but concise brochures that have a short print run fit the bill perfectly. To develop such brochures, the best method to go for is off-set printing, as a large quantity of prints can be obtained in a short time span, though it takes a slightly longer time for all the pre-printing tasks in this technique.

Ancillary services are now provided by several printing service companies in addition to the quality improvements in the prints. These include distribution, direct mailing, formatting, and many more.

The internet has radically altered the scenario, with customers now using websites of printing firms and placing online orders after picking designs and colour specifications from the comfort of their desk. Therefore, brochure printing has undergone ground-breaking alterations in recent times, and the possibilities of future change seem to be endless.

Truly, technology makes life easy, most particularly in business. Thus, take advantage of what technology can give and enhance your creativity to be competitive in brochure printing.
