Things You Should Know About Printing Services

By Janice Chan

When it comes to disseminating information to a huge number of individuals, no other medium is more sought after than print. Over the years the printing services industry has grown immensely and has evolved to its present form of a diversified industry. Today it caters to a vast range of needs of customers, which transcends printing.

Large volume printing services first originated sometime in the--00's when Gutenberg invented the world's first printing press and the whole idea of relief printing was developed. In this method of printing the printed image appears elevated from the base of the material, like in a rubber stamp. This kind of printing has however become a rarity these days, though not completely obsolete.

The industry has seen radical transformation in the printing methods used, and these innovations were mostly driven by advancements in technology. Modern printing methods are quite diverse and have a range of uses. In fact, most customers now feel overwhelmed with the printing choices available in the market.

Offset printing is a well known printing method favoured by most printers these days. In this method, the image is transferred onto paper from a metal plate on which the image is first printed by the use of small amount of ink. This type of printing is quite cost effective and fast, and it is usually preferred when large volumes of prints are needed.

Other well known forms of printing that have evolved over time are electrostatic printing, which can be compared to photocopying, and thermal printing, which creates the print impression by heating coated thermal paper selectively.

However, the latest innovation in printing industry is digital printing. As is clear from its name, it includes image development and editing on a computer, and then this computer generated image is eventually printed after analysis. This mode is fast and flawless, but is appropriate mostly for small volumes. The facility of customized printing with this method has led to computer form printing, where a standard format is used to print documents like bills and invoices whose contents differ in tune with the different needs of each print.

Another significant development in printing has dawned with the advent of the internet. Most printing companies run their own websites that allow clients to conveniently place orders and study designs and specimens, without them having to walk or drive all the way to the firm's premises for this reason.

Printing has always taken quantum leaps every time there has been a technological advancement. The good news is that this trend of progress is going to continue unabated in the future too, ushering in positive advancements to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
