ROI and Internet Marketing

By Grant Staple

The Internet is lovely, dark, and deep. To successfully harness its marketing potential, which is vast, and navigate its pit falls, any interested company or small business would be best served by an adept Internet marketing agency. Online marketing has come a long way from banner ads and Google AdSense. What it takes to create and execute a successful online marketing campaign is experience and expertise.

The elusive combination of experience and expertise is the domain of a minority of Internet firms. The majority of online marketing firms promise much ado, and usually under the guise of proprietary software algorithms and whatnot. In most cases, this is little more than the old gambler's bluff. The thinking is if you bombard the client with hack-and-slash software names and half-baked statistics, you can convince them you have what it takes to increase ROI.

Success can be quantified. Consult with former clients and, if possible, ask for a case study. An online marketing firm that is willing to provide a case study (or two or three or more) is more than likely a firm that has little to hide. The results speak for themselves. If a former client improved sales, rankings, and justified the ROI, then you have a viable firm.

Online marketing is still a relatively new field. Indeed, marketing, as we know it today is only about 60 years old. Online marketing, on the other hand, is approximately 15 years old. Though a traditional marketing campaign can be very effective, it is difficult to chart its ROI. Online marketing, on the other hand, can be analyzed using a variety of metrics. Most marketing firms will explain how they track their progress and what specifically constitutes progress. It cold mean improving Google SERP ranks is enough, or it could be improved Page Rank.

Know what you need from an online campaign before you book an appointment with a marketing company. Simply making more money or selling more products is not going to be enough. Indeed, most firms will promise both. Understand how much you wish to spend, over a matter of weeks or months. Failure to plan is a plan to fail and a failed online marketing campaign could be disastrous.
