How Does Offset Printing Work

By Anita Tan

Many important tasks in a business such as maintaining flow of information intra-company and marketing the offerings of the company need printing service. Therefore it is helpful to learn about the basic working of the frequently used printing process called offset printing.

Offset printing is so popular among printing service companies and clients because for large volumes, it turns out to be cheaper than alternative methods. Therefore good printing service providers recommend the use of offset printing for large volume of prints.

This printing technology uses oil-based ink, which is not soluble in water. In offset printing, rubber blankets act as intermediate for copying the image on the paper, which is originally on the plate.

The first step is developing the images. Previously the images were prepared by creating film negatives and were then transmitted to printing plates made of aluminum. In the present times, the printers can use the image setting system for preparing the plates directly. After this, the plate is stuck to a cylinder with the correct side facing upwards. Then the water and ink are spread on the image plates, in that order. While the ink gets stuck to the image, the water gets attached to that part of the plate which has no image so that the ink does not spread beyond the image.

After painting it with ink, the image is put on a rubber blanket which is on a different cylinder, leading the image to be inverted. The image is reversed to its right side by transmitting the image to sheets that have been cut in line with the need and are placed on a different cylinder.

Printed sheets are stapled, pasted, or arranged in any other manner as required and the printing company sends them after giving some finishing touches.
