The Functions Of An Undertaker In A Funeral Service

By Anton Alvarez

Undertakers are also known as funeral directors and next in line to the family of the deceased and the clergy, they are the most significant persons in charge of the funeral service. These are people who help you arrange the funeral, right from the beginning to the end. Most undertakers consider their tasks as an emergency service, where they have to be on call twenty four hours a day and all days of a year.

A number of decisions need to be taken in the occasion of a person's death, which the grieving family may not be able to take because of the unexpected loss that befalls them. This is where the undertaker steps in and takes over. He takes quick and sound decisions about the time, venue and kind of the funeral service. Additionally, the undertaker in fact helps you come to terms with your loss, by simply being there for you and taking up responsibility of an organiser of the funeral services, which depict the love and respect you hold for the deceased.

Preparation of a funeral service begins with deciding upon its time, place and date and then informing the same to family and acquaintances. Once this has been decided, the undertaker makes preparations for shifting the body to the funeral site or where it is to be laid to rest. In the event of a burial service, the right casket in which the body is to be rested is often selected by the undertaker.

The entire organisation of the funeral service, from picking the flowers to choosing the headstone, including making arrangements for clergy, music, food, transport and hymns, is done by the undertaker. All arrangements are made by the undertaker keeping in mind the desires of the relatives so that the deceased gets due respect in the funeral service.

Lastly, some undertakers also help in proper embalming and transportation of the body if required, and in preparation and arranging for the funeral service in another nation if the person has died abroad.
