Printing Services Progress And Development Over The Years

By Raymond Smith

Print medium even today is a very popular mode of disseminating information to a vast range of people. The modern form of the printing services industry is a result of years of change and development in printing modes and techniques. Today it addresses a wide range of needs of customers, which transcends printing.

Bulk printing services through relief printing technology originated during the 1400's when the world's very first printing press was invented by Gutenberg. In relief printing the printed matter appears raised from the background, just as it exists in a rubber stamp. This type of printing has however gone almost out of use nowadays, though not completely obsolete.

The industry has seen major transformation in the printing techniques used, and these changes were mostly driven by advancements in technology. Modern printing methods are quite varied and come to a variety of uses. The sheer diversity of available options in printing techniques in fact greatly confuses the clients.

Offset printing is a well known printing method favoured by most printers these days. In this method, minimum ink is used to print the image, which is first applied on metal plates and is then transferred onto paper. This inexpensive and quick method of printing is highly preferred and used when bulk printing is required.

Evolution in printing technology has also introduced other printing techniques like thermal printing, that requires heating of layered thermal paper, and electrostatic printing, that is similar to photocopying.

However, digital printing is the most recent technological advancement in this field. As the name tells you, in this technique, images are created on a computer, which are then examined for correctness and are then printed. But this fast and trustworthy method works best in cases where only a small number of prints is needed. As the printer can modify each print in this method, it can be used for computer form printing, where items such as receipts or invoices can be printed for different clients, with each having the same format but different contents.

Printing services took another leap when the world wide web started becoming popular. Most printing firms have their own websites that permit customers to conveniently place orders and check out designs and specimens, without them having to walk or drive all the way to the firm's premises for this purpose.

Printing has always taken giant evolutionary jumps with the advancement in technology. The great news is that this trend of change is going to continue unabated in the future too, bringing favourable advancements to improve performance and lower costs.
