SEO For MSN

By David Bungay

All of us make a common mistake. We forget that there are three main search engines and there are others too. Even SEO experts forget this. I do not argue the fact here that Google dominates the search engine niche. Yahoo covers 25%, the latest entrant is Bing, and MSN has not actually stopped working.

The truth is that MSN has a loyal following. As an internet marketer, every avenue counts and you need to stand out. So it makes sense to tweak your website for the loyal followers of MSN too. The method is simple. It is similar to using long tailed key words to get a ranking. The keywords are unusual and hence your webpage gets ranked high up for that particular key word.

What is similar

The good news is that most of the things you have to do are similar. If you rank well in Google, chances are that you will rank well in other search engines too. Yahoo is very similar to Google. However there are certain things you would have to do for optimizing your website for MSN.

The MSN algorithm is different, so it indexes differently and the results are different. To put it simply, the msn search engine spider is of an older generation and you need to optimize your website for it differently.

MSN still crawls meta tags. All the other search engines have stopped relying on meta tags. So the very first thing you have to do for MSN is to use meta tags that are rich in key words.

So get yourself meta tags. It is important that these should be meaningful. Otherwise you run the risk of getting banned by Google. Do not stuff meta tags.

Use the description meta tag, since this is what MSNbot indexes. Do not neglect the title tag either.

Backlinks are not that important for MSN. So you can safely ignore back links for now, when optimizing your website for MSN. This may change in the future, but this is what works now.

This being said, the thing that is vitally important is key words. You could get away with key word stuffing with MSN. However this is not advisable since this will get you banned by Google.

Use key words in domain names, titles, meta tags and sprinkle them (meaningfully) in the content and you are optimized for MSNbot.

I would once again warn you against keyword stuffing and spamdexing. This is not worth the trouble. Optimize your page for MSNbot in such a way that your Google ranking does not suffer and it does not ban you.

So optimize wisely. Use your keywords judiciously. Do not think that you can get away with key word stuffing. MSN may as well update itself, and then you have wasted time and effort and run the risk of getting banned by Google.

It would be pertinent here to let you know that if your website is already optimized for Google and Yahoo, you need to tweak it just a little bit and add relevant meta tags and you are set for MSN.
