Step-by-step Guide in Making a User-friendly Website

By Taylor Reaume

An essential segment of today's commerce is the electronic plane popularly known as the internet. Company advertising invaded the web as the number of electronic citizens continues to grow parallel to global population growth. This realization made websites as important as a company's headquarters and evidently, in some cases, it is considered more valuable than a company's tangible office.

Realizing the need for a user friendly website for your company isn't the end of all your worries. You might then start asking, what defines a true user friendly website? You start searching for tips on designing a user-friendly website only to find yourself confused with all the suggestions you'd find. So instead, you should know the five things to avoid in creating that portal with the right cutting edge.

1. Anything much is less especially when you are dealing with website fonts. Tiny fonts are nothing but an eye strain. Massive fonts, basically, would not strain a reader's eyes but may cause a finger sprain because of too much scrolling. And a font that is too fancy might have that aesthetic quality but try avoiding such fonts in designing a user-friendly website since what is pleasing to look at might not be that pleasing to read.

2. A fast loading webpage is a critical part in designing a user friendly website for your company. Internet connection speed varies depending on the location of a reader and the service provider in that area. With this, it is best to keep graphic usage minimal. Through this, even readers who are using dial-up modems, which might take a long time connecting to the internet, in their web browsing would find it easy to access your web page. You will also save a lot of server space if you minimize using images in your website.

3. Yes, you are using a high-resolution monitor with a heavy duty video card for that realistic display. Viewing sites utilizing very dark or very bright colors in their site isn't your problem. But you must bear in mind that most web readers are not as lucky as you are. So be cautious in the choosing the colors you'd use in your site; color balance and contrasts matters. Developing a user friendly site means providing what pleases all the users. Aesthetics should not mean an eye sore to the visitors of your web portal.

4. The bread and butter of your website are the advertisements found in it. Yes, your readers understand your end of the bargain but, you can't blame them if they get annoyed when they find themselves trapped in the limbo of ads on your website consuming most of their time. Website visitors don't mind a pop-up or two when they visit your site yet, you would surely drive them away if you'll go beyond the acceptable number of pop-ups. Other sites commonly use banner ads instead of the pop-ups. Though it won't block the electronic path, a banner ad like any other fancy images can make web page loading slow so keep those banners minimal.

5. One thing you must not include in your user friendly website structure is the splash page. Splash page, an introduction webpage with your actual site's link, only means an inconvenience. It is always best to get your users to your site as soon as possible relaying the idea of you, giving a premium to every second of their time.
